a good country mile is a historic collaboration between longtime friends and musical cohorts kevn kinney (drivn’ n cryin’) and Anton Fier/The Golden Palominos (Feelies, Pere Ubu, Bob Mould Band) made in a spirit of mutual admiration and respect and an abiding belief in the transformative power and purity of rock ‘n’ roll.

Conceived over the course of many jam sessions in a cigarette smoke-shrouded, coffee-splattered East Village rehearsal space as well as a 75 week long club residency, a good country milefeatures new kinney originals, takes on some longtime favorites by other songwriters, and a handful of fresh readings of vintage kevn and drivn’ n cryin’ songs. The basic tracks were recorded at Martin Bisi's BC Studio in Brooklyn, overdubs and mixing done at One East Recording with Fier producing. a good country mile is being released by almost loaded records on Febuary 21 distributed by Redeye.

“Kevn and I wanted to make a record that had the feel -- the looseness, the innocence and the spontaneity -- of some of the late 60's/early 70s records that we were both fascinated by: The James Gang Rides Again Terry Reid's River, The Faces’ The First Step, Marc Benno's Minnows,” explains Fier, “records made before the corporate rock rules had been established.”

a good country mile is a guitar-heavy album, loaded with big riffs and strutting rhythms that would be at home on a Free or Faces’ album, a drastic but delightful departure from kinney’s customarily more folk-flavored solo efforts. The core ensemble was bassist Andy Hess (Govt. Mule, Black Crowes, John Scofield, etc), Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, etc) on lead guitar joining Fier and kinney. Other musical contributors include Chris Masterson, Jim Campilongo, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Jon Cowherd, Eleanor Masterson, Leslie Mendelson and Lianne Smith.

a good country mile is kevn’s first album outside of drivn’ n cryin’ since 2004’s Sun Tangled Angel Revival, and the first release to use “The Golden Palominos” name since 1996's Dead Inside. This is not the first time kinney and Fier have worked together. Their first collaboration was on drivn’ n cryin’s classic, 1987’s Whisper Tames The Lion which Anton produced and played drums on. Some 20 years later, they reestablished their musical connection when Fier helmed drivn’ n cryin’s 2009 album (whatever happened to the) Great American Bubble Factory.

In the mid 00’s, kevn moved to Brooklyn, went to a show by the Tony Scherr Trio with Fier on drums and the two rekindled their friendship. One thing led to another, and the pair wound up jamming in Anton’s basement rehearsal room in the East Village “recalling the days when I used to jam in the garage or basement of a friend's house whose mom was out shopping,” as kinney puts it, “only now I know how to play!” Kevn started writing, creating “songs of challenge songs of heartbreak songs of longing and belonging rising above and believing.” They began playing Mondays at "Shanyni Rae's Truckstop" at the National Underground in the East Village. By the end, they had performed weekly for nearly a year and a half with a revolving cast of local supporting musicians. This is where the music that wound up on a good country mile was developed and the inspiration of recording together was born.
