Sophe Lux is a stunning, theatrical, female fronted indie-pop band from Portland, Oregon. Both literate and playful, the band has been dazzling music lovers with their imaginative lyrics, Dadaist dramatics and lavish pageantry for more than three years. The band's second full-length release Waking The Mystics was recorded in Summer and Fall of 2005 at the Type Foundry in Portland. The album was produced by lead singer/ primary songwriter Gwynneth Haynes and engineered and mixed by Adam Selzer (The Decemberists, M. Ward) -- "Marie Antoinette Robot 2073" was re-mixed by Brian Vibberts (Green Day: American Idiot). Waking The Mystics will be released in early 2007 on Zarathustra Records, Inc.

The music on Waking The Mystics can best be described as the lovechild of an unholy tryst between Kate Bush, Lord Byron, and Queen. Darkly angelic, the album is effervescent with majesty, humor, and wit. Haynes' voice demonstrates a startling range of vocal creativity and skill, seducing the ears with a dynamic repertoire of expression. The music boasts Eno-inspired guitar loops and French operatics that interweave with harpsichords, carnival accordions, and tightly layered harmonies. The instrumental landscapes transverse everything from Bowie to Bach. The lyrics were inspired by the philosophies of both Nietzsche and Lou Salome, the explorations of the ancient alchemists, the dreamy visions of the surrealists, and the spiritual poetry of William Blake. Like the works of the Beatles and Beck, each song has a character all its own, making the album unique and animated with a rich pallet of human experience.

The themes tackled on Waking The Mystics range across a diverse ideological landscape: from the hypnotism of consumerism in "Target Market" to a mechanical monarch's existential crisis in "Marie Antoinette Robot 2073." Sentiments of hope and courage are examined in "Time of Light," while the challenge of living in a spiritually bankrupt culture is expressed in the darkly comical glam/gospel song "God Doesn't Take American Express." Elsewhere, comparing relational fusion to a magical spell, the intensity of separation and individuation is explored in "Electra 33".

Sophe Lux first appeared in 2002 as a vehicle for songwriter/vocalist Gwynneth Haynes. Her debut album, Plastic Apple , was co-produced by Haynes and Larry Crane at Jackpot! Studio ( Sleater-Kinny, Elliott Smith, Pavement, Cat Power ).   Contributing musicians included Crane, John Moen (The Decemberists), Mike Clarke (Steve Malkmus and The Jicks). Released locally, the album received positive critical acclaim from across the U.S.

Raised in Los Angeles by leftist, artist parents and encouraged to express herself creatively from a young age, Haynes' first paying job at age 6 years was acting in TV commercials. Throughout her youth, she appeared in both plays and movies directed by her older brother, filmmaker Todd Haynes ( Velvet Goldmine , Safe , Far From Heaven ). At 14, she taught herself how to play the guitar and started to write songs. After college, she settled in Portland. Haynes sleeps with a copy of a Kate Bush songbook under her pillow.

Sophe Lux became a proper band in 2004 with Erika Miller on bass, Kelly Goodwin on accordion and keyboards, Scott Appleman on drums, and Twayn Williams on guitars and lap steel joining forces with Haynes. The band has since shared bills with The Gossip, Kristen Hersh ( Throwing Muses ), The High Violets, and Stars of Track and Field. Sophe Lux appears with The Decemberists and Viva Voce on a compilation featuring the best bands of Portland 2004, curated by the Gang of Four's Dave Allen.
